Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Navigate the Maya interface and utilize key commands and shortcuts for efficient workflow
  • Create, manipulate and transform basic 3D models using primitive objects and Transform tools
  • Organize and manage 3D artwork by grouping, parenting and changing pivot points
  • Perform basic and advanced polygon modeling, including selecting, editing, rotating, scaling and transforming components
  • Model simple characters by turning basic polygons into smooth, polished models and attach body parts together
  • Perform UV mapping and unwrapping, paint textures and assign shader attributes to control surface properties
  • Understand and apply rigging techniques, including drawing joints, IK and FK, creating blendshapes and binding skin for accurate deformation
  • Animate objects and characters, including keyframing, using the graph editor and creating walk cycles
  • Utilize camera attributes and animate camera movements for dynamic scene compositions
  • Implement lighting techniques, including directional, spotlight, area and point lights, as well as three-point lighting and HDRI
  • Use Arnold Renderer to produce high-quality renders of 3D projects

  • Intro to Maya
    • Maya interface
    • View, zoom in and out and navigate between different artwork displays through key commands and shortcuts
    • Create and adjust primitives objects to create basic 3D models and using the Transform tools to move, rotate and scale them in three dimensions
    • Organize artwork, group, parent and change pivot point
  • Basic Polygon Modeling in Maya
    • Select components and edit them, rotating, scaling and transforming the elements in the model
    • Delete, extrude or cut to add details to the objects
    • Booleans to overlap objects to merge or extrude new shapes
    • Duplicate or flip components and a focus on how to use object history to keep track of the complexity of the model
  • Simple Character Modeling
    • Turning basic polygons into complex, smooth, polished models
    • Creating edges to follow correct topology
    • Split polygons by creating new edges and faces and draw new polygons freehand
    • Attach body parts together
  • UV Mapping, Texturing and Shading
